Hi Shane-
Thanks again for lunch yesterday.
In the past – I would start off every day with a staff meeting by playing a Seinfeld episode. For Constellation, I am recommending starting in Detroit by buying Seinfeld tickets for October 28th.
Take Kevin and Karen Brown, my wife and I and you. 5 Tickets: $1,000.
Naturally booking a meeting with Kevin prior or after would ensue.
On the same trip – we see Marissa Hunter and Ted Cannis or similar depending on their schedule.
That is a pretty good taste test of Detroit’s buying power.
Our model of $5K/10% month to month agreement hasn’t changed since we started in 2009.
This morning I had coffee with Dave Woodruff of the BobWoodruffFoundation.org (you gotta have a foundation Shane, everyone is doing it) and Dave was driving a truck I hadn’t seen before – a new Hybrid F-150. No wonder – it is just getting launched.
“Stellantis is a constellation of 14 iconic automotive brands, 7 sold in the U.S. ”
Ford: 3 Divisions “In March 2022, Ford announced that it would restructure the company into three separate divisions. Ford Model E is to focus on electric vehicles; Ford Blue is to focus on internal combustion vehicles; and the existing commercial division is to be rebranded as Ford Pro, to focus on vehicle distribution and service.”
GM: Unchanged: Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet and Buick.
That’s 14 divisions to cover. What is your realistic plan?
Please thank your CRO for the web site tip – I will fix it. What isn’t replaceable is our decade plus of schmoozing relationships built with Detroit’s buying billionaires. ($8B on digital between the Big 3). That is entirely why we exist – it’s our job.
As good as you are – and you’re about as good as it gets in this business, (for example, you’re WAY better than me!) – yet without boots on the ground in Detroit, it’s likely going to be little to no American Auto business for Constellation. That is the “sell” to Diana. It has nothing to do with your personal talent level. Few roll into town here with a resume like yours of pure auto experience street cred.
Detroit Digital is one option for your in market sales people. We think we’re the best – twice the coverage for 1/2 the price of hiring. Hopefully you are tempted because we love your tech and know we can sell it here.
But if wait you must until January (you’ll be vying for 2025 models then) so be it. As you said “Auto is in our DNA”. Well – “This is Motor City and this is what we do.” -Eminem
Get inspired all over again and watch “Heroes Of Detroit (Password: HeroesOfDetroit) with us and Eminem this time. Then it’s up to you to do the internal sell to Diana. Covering Detroit is a full time gig and as long as our efforts feed up into you – we both should be just fine.
Please let me know – it’s ok either way. You are a swell guy, a good dad and trustworthy – because you like dogs.
All the best,
Greg Swan
PS: Start September? Auto Show is September 13.
